June 4 to 6, Langley hosted the 2015 BC High School Track and Field Championships.
Thursday, day one of competition, just minutes after the opening ceremony, Elphinstone’s Lucy Schick crushed her previous best time by 17 seconds to claim fifth place in the 1500 metre steeplechase.
Lucy, with Jacob Chabot and Alex Nightingale, both from Chatelech, all ran the 400-metre dash. Jacob in the junior race and Alex in the senior race both took a second off their personal best times, while Lucy, still recovering from the steeplechase less than an hour earlier, had another strong run. In the last event of the evening, Noah Woodin from Elphinstone took a full nine seconds off his personal best time in the bantam boys 1500 metres.
On Friday, Lily Riggs threw a full one metre further than her personal best for a top eight finish in the junior girls javelin. Lily closed out her evening with a strong performance in the junior girls discus. Also performing well on Friday was Elphinstone’s Nick Davis, as he fought strong head winds in the bantam boys 100 metre dash.
Early Saturday, both Lucy and Alex competed in the 800-metre run. Alex, in the senior men’s race, took another second off his personal best time to close out his final event of high school, and Lucy in her third event of the weekend tied her best time in the junior girls race.
Lily, in her third event of the meet, fought through equipment failure and heat to get another top eight finish and another personal best throw by two metres in the hammer. Noah ran a near strategically perfect race as he picked his way through the crowds to claim a fifth-place finish in the bantam boys 3000 metres.
Also performing strongly the last day were Chatelech students Theo Kontekakis in the senior boys shot put and Sage Randle in her final event of high school, running in the senior girls 3000 metre race in blazing heat.
