Girija Edwards of Gibsons presents the Phil Edwards Memorial Trophy for Track Athlete of the Year, named after her father, to Andre De Grasse at the 2017 Canadian National Track and Field Championships in Ottawa. Edwards also presented De Grasse with the Col. Jack Davies Trophy for Overall Athlete of the Year.

De Grasse, a Rio Olympic triple medallist from Markham, Ont., broke the 20-second mark on July 9 to win the Canadian men’s 200-metre title for the first time in his career, crossing the finish line in 19.96 seconds. On July 7, the 22-year-old captured the men’s 100-metre title with a time of 10.13.

He will be in London next month competing against Jamaican track star Usain Bolt.

Dr. Phil Edwards (1907-71) was a middle-distance runner and Canada’s most decorated Olympian for many years, winning medals for Canada in 1928, 1932 and 1936.
