With 32 teams registered for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) Relay For Life, close to 400 people will be walking, running and jogging through the night in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Support for this second annual relay has been tremendous, with many returning teams as well as a crop of new participants who will be camping overnight in the tent city at Roberts Creek Elementary School May 29 to 30. All have been busy raising pledges for the CCS, which will be used for cancer research, support services and prevention education.

Following the Survivors' Victory Lap at 6:30 p.m. and the opening ceremonies, the relay will get underway at 7 p.m. sharp. A packed line-up of local musicians will entertain relay participants on the main stage from 7:15 to 10:30 p.m. on May 29.

Hairdresser Jan Dubord of Roberts Creek is returning to the relay to offer services to people who would like to have their ponytail cut and donated to make wigs for cancer survivors. She will be at the event from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 29.

The unique and very moving luminary ceremony will follow the main show, at 10:30 p.m.

Participants, donors and volunteers will light hundreds of luminary candles around the track, each one dedicated in honour of or in memory of a loved one who has battled cancer. These will be kept burning throughout the night to provide light and hope to those walking and running in the relay. Anyone is welcome to purchase a luminary for $5 each with proceeds going to the CCS. They will be sold until 10 p.m. on relay night.

Relay For Life welcomes cancer survivors to join the Victory Lap and dinner, as well as volunteers and sponsors. Registrations are available at Bank of Montreal branches, Marketplace IGA and many other locations, or by calling the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life co-ordinators at 604-886-7791 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
