The seventh annual International Symposium on Sturgeon (ISS), the living fossils of the sea, brought interest from around the world to Sechelt to tour Target Marine Hatcheries and learn more about their practices last month.

A sinkhole that opened up in Highway 101 at Ocean Avenue on July 20 has now been fixed by the District of Sechelt.

Summer is always a challenging time for the Sunshine Coast Food Bank. This year has been particularly difficult. Donations have been quite low while demand has remained the same. The food bank has also been faced with rising food costs.

A Sunshine Coast RCMP member received a suspended sentence and one-year probation after pleading guilty to assaulting a man during a 2011 traffic stop. Cpl. Murray McNeil was sentenced on Aug. 2 in North Vancouver provincial court.

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for July 30 to Aug. 6: On July 30, a two-vehicle collision occurred eastbound on Highway 101 at Bay Road in Sechelt,after the first vehicle stopped for the left-turning vehicle in front of it.

Sunshine Coast RCMP have tracked down one of the vehicles reported stolen last week in a string of auto thefts over a five-day period. On Aug. 6, RCMP received a report of an abandoned truck in a back road located off Reed Road in Gibsons.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) declared stage two water use restrictions for all regional water users on Tuesday morning, Aug. 6. All those on the Pender Harbour systems remain at stage one until further notice.
