The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is asking Coasters to pledge to reduce their use of water to help stave off Stage 4 water restrictions.
In the last few weeks, water users have managed to cut their daily consumption from 22 million litres to roughly 14 million litres and the SCRD hopes the trend will continue.
“If we can continue to reduce our use, we stand a better chance of prolonging our supply into the fall, when the probability of significant rainfall increases,” said Bryan Shoji, SCRD general manager of infrastructure services.
Residents and businesses are being encouraged to take the “reduce our use” pledge and pick up a sign at the SCRD to put on display.
If Coasters can continue to keep their water consumption under 14 million litres per day, it’s hoped that Stage 4 water restrictions can be averted.
“It is recognized that there are differing opinions on who should be able to use water and who should not. However, the fact remains that right now we have a limited supply and we need to use it as wisely as possible in order to prolong it for as long as possible,” Shoji said.
“It’s further recognized in the SCRD’s Comprehensive Regional Water Plan that the supply needs to be expanded and the SCRD is working to move this plan forward in a timely manner. So please, take the pledge to reduce your use and let us continue to work together to get us through this challenging period.”
The Sunshine Coast (except for Pender Harbour/Earls Cove/Egmont) is currently on Stage 3 water restrictions, which limits outdoor watering to trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables via hand-held hoses with shutoff devices. Other residential outdoor uses of water are prohibited under Stage 3.
