Weekly COVID cases double on Coast to 22

Twenty-two new cases of COVID-19 were reported on the Sunshine Coast between Aug. 22 and 28. It’s the Coast’s highest weekly count reported since the province began publishing numbers for local health areas in November 2020.

Twenty-two new cases of COVID-19 were reported on the Sunshine Coast between Aug. 22 and 28.

Compared to the week before, when 11 cases were reported between Aug. 15 and 21, the number of new cases has doubled. 

In the Howe Sound area, 25 cases were reported between Aug. 22 and 28. For the same week, Powell River reported two new cases. 

Between Aug. 24 and 30, the average daily case rate per 100,000 population was 10 for the Sunshine Coast, eight for Howe Sound and one for Powell River.

The vaccination rate on the Sunshine Coast continues to rise. 

As of Aug. 30, between 55 and 85 per cent of Sunshine Coast residents (not including children under 12 years old) had received their second dose of the vaccine. 

By age category, the vaccination rate for those 12 to 17 years old was 72 per cent for the first dose and 55 per cent for the second. Between the ages of 18 and 49, 74 per cent of residents received their first dose, and 62 per cent had their second jab. The age range with the highest vaccination coverage is the 50+ category, with 89 per cent for the first dose, and 85 per cent for the second.
