Local growth, not departure

Community concerns over Modo’s presence on the Sunshine Coast have been met with reassuring news: while the carshare cooperative leaving the region, it is celebrating the  transition of Coast service to a local partner.

In a statement to Coast Reporter, Sandra Phillips, CEO of Modo, clarified that its withdrawal from Langdale is part of a planned collaboration with Coast Car Co-op, a locally run carshare service.

“Modo has not withdrawn service from the Sunshine Coast — rather, this is a success story of co-operative support and local capacity building,” she said.

Philips explained that for several years, Modo stationed vehicles at Langdale to support Coast Car Co-op as it built up its membership and fleet. Now, Coast Car Co-op has grown enough to take over the location independently — a milestone both organizations are proud of, says Philips.

Modo confirmed it will wind down its Langdale presence by the end of August, in alignment with its original agreement. The vehicle at Langdale remains available to the public, now operated by Coast Car Co-op.

Philips emphasized her commitment to maintaining strong shared mobility in the region. “We will continue to monitor demand and collaborate with Coast Car Co-op to reassess the arrangement if needed.”

“Continuing on from our wonderful 10 year cooperation and collaboration with Modo Car Co-op our Coast Car Co-op is placing one of our vehicles at the Ferry Terminal, which is available to Modo members as part of our ongoing roaming membership agreement,” said Aaron Walker from Coast Car Co-op. “As affiliate co-ops we see ourselves as extensions of each other. Our members can roam and use Modo cars, and their members can use ours with a simple application to become roaming members. We are truly thankful for Modo’s support in the past, and continued support as we expand our fleet here on the Coast. We are welcoming all Modo members with a 10 per cent discount on roaming rates at the Langdale location until the end of September.”
