Five local governments and organizations on the Sunshine Coast have joined forces to tackle the growing demand for recreational facilities through a collaborative sports field planning initiative.
District of Sechelt, Sunshine Coast Regional District, Town of Gibsons, shíshálh Nation, and School District 46 (called “The Working Group”) announced Monday, June 16, that they are working on a regional Sports Field Strategy to address the shortage and plan for future growth.
"As our communities continue to grow, so does the need for modern, accessible, and sustainable outdoor recreation spaces," the release stated.
The plan includes a 10-year strategy that will asses exsisting facilities and future needs across the region, providing recommendations for field management, allocation, and both capital and operational investments.
The release emphasizes that the strategy will focus on sustainability, inclusion and equitable access to sports and recreation for all residents.
Currently in early research and information-gathering phases, the project will rely on community input to align planning with local needs and priorities.
Those wishing to give their say can participate through an online survey available until July 11.
Additional community engagement events will be announced on the project website.
The strategy will consist of three phases, with final recommendations expected in early 2026.
