School District No. 46 ACE-IT carpentry program students competed in the Regional Skills Canada competition held at Howe Sound Secondary School in Squamish last month.
Seven students, Aaron Barr, Haden Bush, Raven DiPietro, Sean Parfitt, Aaron Pazur, Dustin Sigurdson and Evan Sorensen, competed in the carpentry or cabinet-making divisions.
In the carpentry division, students built a sawhorse with several complex angles that required the use of math to determine the true length of the legs that lean in two directions. Sean placed first.
“Sean was not the first one to complete the project and, in fact, his project was not even fully complete,” said District principal Phil Luporini. “His attention to exact fits of the joints, the accuracy of the lengths of parts and the smoothness of his finishing helped him to win first place. Sean will qualify for the provincial competition in April.”
Aaron placed second and Raven placed third in this division.
In the cabinet-making division, students built an oak box with a sliding lid and a small box inside that slid on rails. One box was built in inches and the other in millimetres
Dustin Sigurdson seized first place and impressed the judges with both his speed and accuracy.
“He was able to complete the construction of his box with time left over for plenty of sanding, resulting in a fine finish,” said Luporini. “Dustin’s box was square and the parts were cut with precision to the plan given. Dustin also qualifies for the provincial competition in April.”
Haden placed third in this division.
“All of the young men stated that they had a good time. They particularly enjoyed the good food prepared by Howe Sound Secondary Culinary Arts program. Congratulations to the seven Sunshine Coast ACE-IT students who competed,” added Luporini.
