At least five men from Gibsons will face criminal charges related to an attack on a campsite of skateboarders during the Pender Harbour May Day festivities.

According to Sgt. Danny Willis of the Sunshine Coast RCMP, more men may be charged as more information becomes available from the investigation into the May 23 violence.

"They are all under 30 and from the Gibsons area," said Willis on July 22, after the Crown prosecutor approved charges against the five. "We hope to arrest them in the next couple of days."

Allegedly, the men were all involved in an unprovoked attack on the skater party, using hockey sticks as weapons. About 75 skaters, in town for a high-profile longboarding competition, were sleeping or socializing at a private campsite when the attack began in the early hours of May 23. At least two of the campers were hospitalized with head injuries and about a dozen others, including some women, were treated by ambulance staff for less severe injuries.
