In March, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit said speed reductions and pedestrian crossings were coming to the stretch of Highway 101 between the Gibsons Boundary and Woodcreek Park. Three pedestrians have died in the section of road in the past 20 years. Coast Reporter inquired after the status of the changes and received the following response:
“The Ministry of Transportation and Transit originally proposed the crosswalk installation in spring/early summer. However, underground utility conflicts encountered in the field required additional design modifications.
Preliminary work was completed in July, and the remaining installation will proceed once the necessary materials are delivered.
The ministry anticipates completion of the crosswalk by the end of September, subject to any further delays in material supply.
The speed limit adjustment will take effect concurrently with the crosswalk installation.
The new pedestrian signal at Highway 101 and Oceanview Drive is currently in the final design phase. Installation is targeted for fall 2025.”
