For the second consecutive year, Coast Reporter has won the newspaper excellence award as the top newspaper in its circulation class in B.C. and Yukon.

The award was presented at the 2013 Ma Murray British Columbia and Yukon Community Newspaper Association awards gala at the River Rock Hotel and Casino in Richmond last Saturday, April 20.

Coast Reporter has received the general excellence award in five of the last seven years with awards in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013.

Coast Reporter also received the top award for best classified section in B.C., a silver award for top editorial in B.C. by editor Ian Jacques and a bronze award for best feature photo for photographer Justin Samson.

The judges said in their comments for the newspaper excellence award, This paper is packed with well-written news stories and local features in addition to sports and entertainment content. Comprehensive, a pleasure to read and offering something for everyone.

And for the classified award the judges said, Congratulations on an excellent classified section. Great layout and informative classifications. Well thought out and great for the consumer. Also found on-line section easy to read.

For the editorial award, the judges said, Ian Jacques' account of political misconduct is adroitly written, managing to outline the series of events and provide earnest commentary on the right for freedom of information.

The judges commended photographer Samson for his heads-up approach to capturing the annual Fox Hunt.

The photographer recognized the potential for a great picture from the year before. With that knowledge he returned to capture the drama of a Fox Hunt.

Coast Reporter publisher Peter Kvarnstrom said it was a team effort from not only the Coast Reporter staff, but also the community to earn this recognition.

We are all very proud of the awards that we win on behalf of our community, but it is the full engagement of our community that really counts as a unique measure, said Kvarnstrom. It truly takes a great, engaged and strong community to put together a great newspaper. Our team of professionals is very proud of this recognition, but we simply could not do what we do every week without all of you, our readers, employees and stakeholders. Congratulations to you all.
