On July 30 a group of 20 enthusiasts met at the home of Bill and Agnes Clark in Sandy Hook to form the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club.

Participants came from Gibsons, Sechelt, Wilson Creek, Halfmoon Bay and Pender Harbour to enjoy an evening of good company and dark skies.

The club is open to anyone with an interest in exploring the night sky. Attendees at the first meeting ranged from experienced observers to complete beginners. After the meeting, telescopes and astronomy binoculars were set up for members to enjoy a clear night sky.

Plans for the future include a club website, guest lecturers and creating initiatives aimed at preserving dark skies on the Sunshine Coast. The club will strive to introduce astronomy to local youth and support efforts already started in Coast schools.

The next meeting of the club will be in Halfmoon Bay on Friday, Aug. 27, at 8 p.m. The location will be confirmed at a later date. Anyone interested in joining the astronomy club should contact Bill Clark at [email protected].
