Spring into wellness

Reach for fresh, local greens for healthy spring eating.

With a harsh winter barely in the rear view mirror, it’s almost hard to believe that spring is finally here, but it truly is! The first day of spring was March 20 and now is a great time to break our winter hibernation habits and ready body, mind and soul for a fresh start to wellness.

Easy spring rituals can help set the tone for a healthy, happier transition to the new season.  Think of this as your own personal spring training – you’ll feel lighter, healthier and stronger going forward.

First, get moving! We all tend to hunker down and stay inside and cozy during winter. But prolonged lack of activity can make us feel stagnant come spring. Maybe you’ve let your fitness regime lax or were disappointed when a New Year’s resolution to be more active didn’t last. Here’s your chance to start over and ease into a springtime fitness plan that’s more fun and sustainable.

You can start slowly with a daily walk for groceries, or a stroll along the waterfront at Davis Bay, Porpoise Bay or Trail Bay. Work your way up to the trails at Hidden Grove (Tuwanek), Brookman Park and Chapman Creek (Sechelt). Or, up the ante and head for a hill hike at Soames Hill and Sprockids Park (Gibsons) or Mount Daniel (Pender Harbour). Set your own goals and go at your own pace, but do try to commit to some activity a few times a week so you’ll notice improvements and can track how you feel.

Spring often sparks a desire in us to learn something new. If so, why not try a Pilates, yoga, dance, or fitness class? There are newbie spring workshops and open houses at many of the studios up and down the Coast. Sign up or drop in and give something different a whirl – not only will you meet some fun, keen people, you may just hit a new fitness groove.

Did you pack on a few extra pounds over winter? Me too! Often our metabolism slows down a little and the comfort foods we crave during the winter season can add bulk to our diet and to our waistline. Spring markets will soon be bursting with fresh greens and lighter foods. And you may find your taste changing too. Try eating lighter for a few weeks. Steer towards spring salads, lots of veggies, herbal teas and lighter coffee drinks (hint: skip the whip!) and avoid rich sugary sweets, opting for fresh fruit or berries as treats, instead.

Perhaps the bustle of spring break has you feeling stressed out? Take a deep breath. Try learning this short tactical breathing technique employed by first responders, soldiers and enlightened lay people. Simply breathe in for four counts. Hold your breath for four counts. Then breathe out for four counts. Hold your breath for four counts. Repeat the cycle as many times as you like. The more you do it, the more chilled out you’ll feel. Happy spring!
