Now is the perfect time to jump-start your vegetable garden with a talk and demonstration from Mike Nassichuk at Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m. Nassichuck claims he was raised in a veggie patch, so he knows his peas and parsnips, and has discovered many ways to ease and simplify the work.
Bring your vegetable-growing questions, problems and dreams. Reserve your spot by phone (604-740-3969) or email [email protected]. Cost is $15 for garden members, $20 for non-members. Tickets may be available at the door.
“I grew it myself!” is your proud declaration of the superior taste and nutrition of your fresh-harvested food. Some salad greens can be sown and harvested again and again by just snipping off the leaves. You can choose varieties of peas, beans or tomatoes for a slow harvest over many weeks, or a big harvest all at once for processing or freezing. There is such a wide choice of vegetable seeds and plants sold these days. And for children, the chance to do a bit of digging, planting, weeding or eating is an adventure they will remember. How about those rainbow carrots?
Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden is at 5941 Mason Rd. in West Sechelt, and is open four days a week during early spring, Friday through Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., by donation. Members enjoy unlimited visits plus many extra perks. For information, see www.coastbotanicalgarden.org
