Pender Harbour-Egmont Highlights: Garden club presents ‘Weeds!’ with Sandy Matches

Happy Spring! This Saturday, March 23, the Legion hosts their Easter Ham/Turkey draw and pie auction. Five extra hams and five extra turkeys have been generously donated. Early bird draw starts at 3 p.m. All proceeds go to the Generator Fund.

Happy Spring! This Saturday, March 23, the Legion hosts their Easter Ham/Turkey draw and pie auction. Five extra hams and five extra turkeys have been generously donated. Early bird draw starts at 3 p.m. All proceeds go to the Generator Fund. 

Taking the stage Sunday, Bad Tonz, 2 to 5 p.m. at the Legion. $10 at the door. 

The same day, March 24, Matt Byrne, a true son of Newfoundland, will bring music from his homeland to the School of Music. Tickets are $30 at www.penderharbourmusic.ca. 

The Pender Harbour Garden Club presents Sandy Matches on March 25 at the School of Music, 1 to 3 p.m. Proprietor of Handy Sandy Exterior Design, he has designed and installed gardens along the Coast for the past decade and gardened and collected specimen plants since childhood. Sandy present “Weeds!” and answer questions. Membership fees are $20 for a calendar year or $5 drop in. Included with an annual membership is a discount card for 10 to 20 per cent off plants at most garden stores on the Coast and some in the Lower Mainland. Coffee, tea and snacks are complimentary at all meetings. 

It may be said that the Pender Harbour Women’s Connection is going to the dogs. In fact, their March 26 speaker, Heather Fowler, will be presenting a talk on the value trained therapy dogs in our community. With the help of Starr, her canine assistant, she will answer the question, “What can Therapy Dogs offer?” Heather is co-owner of Dial-A-Dog, Canine Companionship. She has 25 years of volunteer experience with the St John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog program. Warning: this meeting could get a little “ruff”! Doors open at 9:30 a.m. at the School of Music. $4 drop-in fee. Refreshments included. 

Pender Harbour Community Club Bingo returns March 28 at the Hall. Doors open at 5 p.m., early bird begins at 6:30, main games at 7 p.m. The $1,000 jackpot game can be won in 51 calls. 

Art classes with local artist Kevin Wells: Adding Texture to Your Acrylic Paintings will be held Wednesdays, April 3 to 24, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sarah Wray Hall. Details and registration: penderharbourheritage.ca/art-classes-april-2024 

Pender Harbour Blues Society’s Spring Dance Saturday, April 6 with “Terminal Station” will showcase fantastic musicians performing great dance music. Get tickets online at phblues.ca or the EarthFair Bookstore in Madeira Park. 

Driftwood Players will bring the Lizzie Borden story alive, performing Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock on April 13, 2 p.m. at the Hall. Did she do it? Tickets at EarthFair store. 

Help support our Community Hall! The annual Plant & Garden Sale Saturday, April 27, is a major fundraiser for the hall. New this year is the Vintage Market. Call out for donations of plants, seedlings, pots, garden tools, garden décor, books, birdhouses, furniture and floral or plant/garden themed items for the popular White Elephant tables. Pick up of items can be arranged. Calling all bakers for muffins, cookies, and cakes for the kitchen. The famous $5 lunch will be back! There are a limited number of tables for vendors ($35 before March 31, $45 after). Please contact Lesley at 778-840-1692 if you have items to donate, baking, or want to be a vendor or volunteer.
