Obituary: Royal F. Maynard

'This unparalleled master mariner also owned many pleasure crafts over the years, however his pride and joy was always the 66' Seiner conversion commonly known as the Universe. Royal spent his leisure time on this vessel entertaining his abundance of friends and family, with his lead hand June Maynard, a very worthy first mate indeed!'

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Captain Royal Franklin Maynard.

Royal was born to Carol and Lorne Maynard on Nelson Island, B.C. on June 27, 1943. Royal was the consummate Mariner throughout his life, he worked his way through the tow industry to become skipper at the young age of 19. No small feat to be sure. Royal reached the pinnacle of his career when he landed Master Duty on the mighty 144' Rivtow commissioned Captain Bob. Royal manned the helm for the last ten years of his career before retiring in 2007.

This unparalleled master mariner also owned many pleasure crafts over the years, however his pride and joy was always the 66' Seiner conversion commonly known as the Universe. Royal spent his leisure time on this vessel entertaining his abundance of friends and family, with his lead hand June Maynard, a very worthy first mate indeed! For many years Royal and June explored the vast B.C. coast, their journeys and adventures taking them far beyond the scope of most imaginations.

Royal loved fishing and crabbing, prawning and such, but most of all he just loved to be on the water. The limited amount of time Royal found his feet on the ground he enjoyed tending the garden with his green thumbed partner June. Royal and June always with a bounty for friends and family alike.

Beyond Royal's career duties, he was an entertainer at heart. Royal often engaged his company with his quick wit and endearing sense of humour. For many reasons in living and in death, Royal has and will be often described as a legend.

Royal is survived by his loving wife June Maynard, children Deanna, Glenn, Leanne, John, Greg, Royal and Andreas, 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dad may your swells be gentle and your horizon long. Farewell Captain, so sad you are gone.
