Obituary: Krystyna Benda

As her granddaughter (nine) said, "The stars have never shined brighter than they do now with Babi in the sky [cleaning them]."

Krystyna Benda, loving daughter, wife, mother, and babcia died on October 8th, at her home with her family after a courageous four year fight with cancer.

Krystyna was born in Poland on April 15th, 1952, to her [surviving] mother Olga Zajacova. Krystyna would later study textiles and work in the Czech Republic, where she met and then married her husband Jan. They would have two boys together, Petr and Pavel. In 1983 Jan, Krystyna, and their boys emigrated to Canada, living in Ontario and parts of the States before moving to the Sunshine Coast in 1986 where they would put down roots and one year later open Krystyna Glass.

Krystyna had a keen eye for colour and design, obvious in both the studio and in her home. She was a people person who liked to talk about current events; politics, and sports, and relished in a good debate. While she loved to entertain (she was an amazing cook), she equally enjoyed peaceful moments in the garden, and time alone with a good book and a glass of wine. Although she didn't get to travel as much as she had liked, Krystyna spoke fondly of her trips to Paris and Hawaii.

We will deeply miss Krystyna, affectionately known by the community as the "Glass Lady".

As her granddaughter (nine) said, "The stars have never shined brighter than they do now with Babi in the sky [cleaning them]."

We would like to express our deepest thanks to Dr. Karen Forgie and the oncology staff at Sechelt Hospital. Krystyna was so very grateful for your support, care, and friendship throughout her treatment.

We would like to ask that donations be made to the Sechelt Hospital in Krystyna's memory.
