Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and enjoyed some time outside, though it was a tad brisk and breezy out there. Temperatures dipped below freezing for a few nights and not much above zero during the day but at least there was no snow!
Although this may not make the local news, we in Halfmoon Bay are extremely pleased that the washed-out section of road on Redrooffs has finally been paved. Since the rain event in November, the temporary fix has been an uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous road to travel. Last Tuesday, BA Blacktop placed a temporary lift of asphalt to alleviate any further maintenance until the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) comes up with a permanent fix expected to take place this summer. There were only minor delays during the repaving process and the end result is awesome. We are grateful for the crews and traffic controllers that worked hard to make this a much more pleasant and safe route to travel.
This may not be something that “happened in Halfmoon Bay” but worthy to note as it will affect all of us on the Sunshine Coast. The distribution of single-use plastic bags will soon be phased out, so businesses and consumers are finding other ways to pack groceries and take home purchased items. The Sechelt Downtown Business Association (SDBA) has partnered with Boomerang Bags, a global grassroots movement connecting and empowering local communities to tackle plastic pollution. This initiative invites volunteers to sew reusable bags from donated fabric to be distributed to our downtown shops to help reduce the use of plastic bags. Last week some eager and energetic sewing enthusiasts (or some folks that just wanted to help), gathered together to cut fabric and create kits for volunteers to take home and sew. Included in the kit is a pocket to be sewn onto each bag with the Boomerang Bag logo and “Sunshine Coast.” Silk screening is done by Sarita Moodie of Wolfpups Studio in Roberts Creek who has graciously volunteered her time and resources to make these pockets. There were 27 volunteers, including a few of us from Halfmoon Bay and four volunteers who helped but were unable to attend. It is so wonderful to be part of something so important and something that we love to do – sew! Thank you to all the volunteers who organized the “fabric cutting” event and a special thank-you to Boomerang Bag organizer Suzy Grant for bringing us all together. Suzy shared that, “I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of volunteers and I really do appreciate the initiative taken to get the work needed accomplished.” Roughly 120 “ready to sew bag kits” were created as well as roughly 60 that required a little more cutting before sewing. Suzy adds, “I would say that today was a raging success and has set the bar very high for future events!” These bags are sturdy, machine washable and best of all, locally made by dedicated, caring individuals here on the Sunshine Coast! Stay tuned for more updates as this initiative progresses. If you have any questions or require more information, please send an email to Suzy at [email protected].
The Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCA) is thrilled to announce their new website halfmoon-bay.ca where you will find all the latest news and information. Included on their website is the 2022 Calendar of Events, Coopers Green, fundraising, membership and more. HBCA President, Linda McMahon says, “We hope you like it as much as we do!” Also, in an email sent to current members of HBCA, Linda writes, “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank everyone who has made possible everything we have done in the past couple of years. As previous board members retired for greener pastures following their stellar contribution to the HBCA and the community, new board members picked up where they left off. Nothing is accomplished without the help of volunteers, sponsors, and other community members – their involvement has been and continues to be so generous and so appreciated! Thank-you!”
