Gumboot Nation: Late summer is still great summer

The success of Creek Daze, and what's next in Roberts Creek
C. Roberts Creek Legion
The Roberts Creek Legion building started as a small cabin, purchased in 1958, and has since expanded to a larger, lovingly kept structure.

Creek Daze was a huge success, in part due to the amazing community at large but specifically thanks to the warm leadership of Diana Lux — your smiling face made everything better. A shout out to the volunteers that made it happen; James & Uma, Brent, Radah and Kannan, Tammy & Nancy, Pholene, Jack, Elke & Dave, Virginia, Rob, Rhonda, Sarina, Sonia, Tammy, Erin, Keely, Scott, Pamela, Maya and Olivia! Your efforts help transform the Creek into a community. And big hugs to MC Scotty!

You don’t have to wait until the middle of March to celebrate the Irish in you, as the Shamrockers are here this Friday, Aug 19. Starting at 7:30 and going late (?), it’s an Irish pub night at the Legion #219. High energy dancing, Irish fun and dinner by Dean is Irish stew and Guinness pie, to help soak up the whisky. Tickets in advance will save a few dollars, at robertscreeklegion.com.  Members $8, guests of members $15. At the door, members $10 and guests $20.

A very special Midweek Metal show at our little legion, this Wednesday, it’s headbanging night featuring local heavy Skraeling, Squamish metal Hoopsnake and from Germany, Confusion Master! The “Scouring for Doom” western Canada tour rolls into town Aug. 24. Show starts @ 7, family friendly until 9:30 p.m., I have been told it will go till 11 p.m. Last time Hoopsnake came, they brought a wall of bass amps, so expect the volume to go to 11! Get your taste at confusionmaster.bandcamp.com & hoopsnakeriffs.bandcamp.com.

Thursday Jazz! Aug. 25th is the Dinner Show featuring The Control Group, Jack & John Jeevous, Jay Walter, Ron Clumpus and assorted special guests, doing experimental jazz fusion madness, MADNESS I SAY!

And next Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 p.m. – 1 a.m., the #219 presents Project Future, who in turn present Michael Red with The Funkdealer & Mieke Jay (cue the bass! boom boom chicka boom, boom chicka boom).

Our Aug. 21st Slow Sunday has BUGS Ukulele Singers on tap at noon. Gerardo the Clown will be offering “stage help” throughout the day(!). Singer-songwriter Michelle Morand will serenade you, followed by the rich, soulful voice of Coast guitarist Carl O’Day. Get some levity from stand-up comedian Nelson Giles, and then back to music as vocalist Wanda Nowicki will perform with The Van Aldens, featuring Bud Kurz, Bill Barclay, Steven Schwabl and his Vancouver cousin Albert. Bring your chair and drink, you deserve to slow down for an afternoon. In the Gazebo behind the library.

Not my usual modus operandi to acknowledge something non-Creekish, but I have to mention that got my passport renewed in time to get to Wilson Creek this weekend. I will be at the Clarke Farm on Tyson Rd., enjoying all that the Rogue Arts Festival has to offer. Hope to see you there! roguefest.ca
