Give back and volunteer

Get Out There

As we enter another year here on the lovely Sunshine Coast, you may be thinking about trying something new, be it a new sport, trail, race or trip.

If so, have you ever thought of putting your passion for the outdoors into giving back to the community? If you have, you are in luck as there are many opportunities to get your hands dirty (literally) and volunteer.

Here are just a few options:

Ruby Lake Lagoon Society: Whether it’s volunteering for events or helping with their community programming, there are a wealth of opportunities at the popular Iris Griffith Centre, a true gem located in Madeira Park. See more at: www.lagoonsociety.com.

Dakota Ridge: This area was not even open to the public when we moved here seven years ago. Now it is a cross country skiers’ paradise that wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated volunteers who have made it what it is today, and there is always more to do on the hill. See more at: www.scrd.ca.

Sunshine Coast Cycling Club and Sunshine Coast United Mountain Bikers: If you like to ride a bike, getting involved in one or both of these groups is essential. Besides meeting new riding buddies, you can get involved in planning events and building world class trails on the Sunshine Coast. See more at: www.sunshinecoastcycling.ca and www.scumb.ca.

Sechelt Groves Society: If you love to hike and help build trails, this is the place for you. Volunteers who build like energizer bunnies year round have created this very special area. See more at: www.secheltgroves.com.

Tetrahedron Outdoor Club: A must do club for those who love to play outside.  Become a member and be a part of the Sunshine Coast outdoor community. Learn more at: www.tetoutdoor.ca.

So, what are you waiting for? Pick up your shovel, brainstorm some ideas and get out there to give back. Chances are, you will meet some new friends who may just introduce you to that new sport or trail. And who knows, you may also find yours truly around the table too.

Until next time, see you out there!
