Bursaries help women achieve goals

Education is invaluable in preparing for success in life, but gaining further education after secondary school is often too costly for many.

Education is invaluable in preparing for success in life, but gaining further education after secondary school is often too costly for many.

Members of the Cana-dian University Women's Club (Sunshine Coast) acknowledge this factor by raising funds to assist local women who are attending or plan to attend accredited post-secondary institutions. Since establishing a Bursary Society in '90, they have awarded $83,000 in bursaries. Past recipients have pursued a wide range of studies: education, health care, archeology, business administration, First Nations studies, financial management and tourism. Some have continued on to attain post-graduate degrees.

In 2009 there were nine bursary winners. When expressing appreciation for the help with tuition, these women will often remark how the gift of being chosen was equally as important to them as the money.

Money comes mostly from among the club members, small investments and special events such as the recent fashion show given by Ivan Sayers and Co. in Sechelt. Donations to the Society come also from generous individuals who recognize the fact that the cost of tuition is the main reason women do not pursue a path towards work that could improve their lives and the lives of their families. As a registered society, the Bursary Board can issue tax receipts for donations of $10 or more and can arrange for sustained giving in recognition of an individual.
