It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Vera Askew, a fiercely independent woman whose life was guided by integrity, compassion, and a deep love for family, community, and country.
Born on the prairies, Vera spent her early years surrounded by wide-open skies before moving to Hillside, BC. She attended school in Gibsons in the late 1940s and early 1950s, where she fell in love with the coast and the ocean — a love that stayed with her for life.
Vera was a champion for what was right, standing firmly for justice and advocating for the vulnerable. She poured her energy into fundraising for causes close to her heart, organizing countless events to support those in need. One of her proudest accomplishments was founding the St. Bart’s Food Bank, a legacy of service that continues to help her community.
She found joy in the simple and meaningful pleasures of life — walking in nature, tending her garden, crafting, and writing. She treasured time with her friends and family and embraced travel and adventure whenever she could.
Vera is lovingly remembered by her children, Terri-Lynne and James, her grandchildren, Teala and Mark, and many friends whose lives she touched with her warmth, generosity, and unwavering spirit.
Her faith in God, her love for Canada, and her steadfast devotion to her family shaped the remarkable woman she was. Vera’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Service will be held on August 23rd at 11am at St Barts Church 659 N Rd, Gibsons, BC. Flowers from your garden or donations made to St. Barts Church or charity of your choice.
