Bursaries for women on the Sunshine Coast

In difficult economic times, many women try to improve their lives by returning to school to upgrade their employment prospects. However secondary education is often too costly for many.

In difficult economic times, many women try to improve their lives by returning to school to upgrade their employment prospects. However secondary education is often too costly for many.

Members of the Canadian University Women's Club (CFUW) acknowledge this fact by raising funds to assist local women who are attending or plan to attend accredited post- secondary institutions and show financial need.

The CFUW Sunshine Coast Club's bursary society was established in 1990. Since then, more than $103,000 in bursaries have been awarded. Past recipients have pursued a wide range of studies: health care and nursing, accounting, business administration, First Nations studies, ministry, financial management and trades.

In addition, CFUW is committed to providing a $500 bursary, each year, to Capilano University for a deserving woman studying at the university in Sechelt. Recipients, when expressing appreciation for the help with tuition will often remark that being chosen inspired them just as much as the financial assistance.

Funds are raised through a variety of means including events, activities, donations, small investments and bequests. Donations more than $10 are tax deductible and all monies received go entirely to the bursary fund.

CFUW is currently accepting applications from mature women living on the Coast. More information and an application form can be found at www.cfuwsc.org/bursary.html or call 604-885-9340.
