Thirty runners take part in ‘Swamp Thing’

Race season for Team Wolverine Athletics was off to a great start on Saturday in Pender Harbour with the first race: Swamp Thing. The sun was shining, the trails were muddy and 30 runners toed the start line.

The long course was dominated by Blair Hurlbut from Roberts Creek with a lead of over 10 minutes. The majority of the short course runners were part of a birthday celebrating Halfmoon Bay resident Megan Stuart-Stubbs’ 60th birthday.

The field was a great mix of Coasters and runners from the Lower Mainland; from beginners to advanced and of all ages.

The long course first male and female finishers were Blair Hurlbut (49:38) and Anna Verspoor (1:02:16).

The short course first male and female finishers were Leslie Marciniak (39:33) and George Connell (1:13:43)

The winners went home with a $75 gift certificate from sponsor Pacesetter Athletics and Kintec.

Sponsors included IGA Gibsons and Wilson Creek, Pacesetter Athletics, Kintec, The 101 Brewhouse, Beachcomber Coffee, Tailwind Nutrition and Nine O’Clock Gun Company.

This was the first race in the Sunshine Coast Trail Series, which consists of six events highlighting the trails from Pender Harbour to Gibsons.

The next race is Easter Weekend, April 20 in Halfmoon Bay with the start and finish in Connor Park. Registration closes April 15 and you can sign up on raceroster.com if you search “Jurassic Parc.” You can also sign up to volunteer if you would rather help out than run the race.
