Two Elphinstone Secondary School athletes placed fifth and sixth at the B.C. Wrestling Championships following strong showings at Zone Championships earlier this month.

Elphinstone qualified five girls for the provincials, held in Langley on Feb. 15 and 16: Sam Solis de Ovando, Alana Krinapai, Lia Trent, Alice Clements and Eilis Mackenzie. Chatelech High School qualified one girl, Brooke Harapnuk.

Everyone competed very well. Team captain Eilis Mackenzie finished her six years of competitive wrestling starting at Gibsons Elementary and wrestling right through her high school years. She showed tremendous leadership this year, helping to guide younger teammates to wrestle their full potential. This year at provincials Eilis saved her best for last, placing fifth and landing herself on the podium.

New to wrestling this year, Zone 5 champion, Grade 8 student Alice Clements surprised many of her opponents by placing sixth at her first provincials.

Congratulations to all the wrestlers from the Sunshine Coast for competing hard and representing their respective schools in high-level competition.
