Yield intersection is a no-brainer

For more than 20 years, I have been squawking about the lack of a yield intersection at the south end of Redrooffs, where it meets Highway 101.

There has been a multitude of serious accidents at this intersection. In fact, 17 years ago my pregnant wife was involved in an injury-causing accident at the intersection.

If one goes up to Madeira Park there is a yield situation to get onto the 101, and about 40m to enter the main traffic. At the intersection I am referring to, there is solid road base for 400m. All it needs is prep and paving. Removal of the stop sign with required signage and line painting would be great.

Recently, work has been completed to finish a lengthy area of bicycle lane, which is great, and also improvements for the benefit of those coming down the hill on 101 and wanting to turn right. This is a good thing.

I have spoken to highways, the roads contractor, the Sunshine Coast Regional District, and everyone involved told me to speak to the District of Sechelt.

Years ago, I did just that (a previous mayor), and he told me, although, they have jurisdiction for a small area at the south end of Redrooffs, and that the intersection was their responsibility, there wasn't enough voters to warrant the expense.

Well, what about the well-being of hundreds of SCRD taxpayers that live in the area, the school buses, the children on the buses, not to mention the older residents that have difficulty looking up the 101 hill, to enter the roadway?

Safety should take a front seat to politics!
