Regarding the not-in-my-backyard concerns voiced by Martin Machler in the Sept. 8 paper (“One neighbour, you say?”).
Most people are aware that the homeless shelter has been using the annex at St. Hilda’s church. But how many know where St. Hilda’s church is? Have you taken a walk around the perimeter of the property? If not, here is the walk-around:
To the north of St. Hilda’s sits Rockwood Centre. To the east are The Osprey condos – 41 units. Then to the south, hidden behind a wonderful forest of trees, is a house. On the east side we have a swimming pool and library (both have children coming and going), also the police station. Down a bit to the northeast is a school and playground and from April to September the farmers’ market is there every Saturday. Also, St. Hilda’s church hall is only steps away from the annex, and there are many groups that use this space for their meetings, including Girl Guides and a youth dance group.
Please think about this for a while. Where do you think would be the perfect place?
