This letter is to raise awareness of the SCRD’s plan to implement Stage 5 indoor and outdoor water restrictions (more severe than Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions) for 365 days of the year and for future decades. Smart water meters are expensive and short-sighted. They will not address drought or more subdivision development and will not increase water supply during dry periods.
The $5 million to $7 million required for smart water meters should instead be used to protect the Chapman watershed, which is under threat to logging. Smart water meters will not upgrade the water mains and will not renew the old infrastructure or increase capacity.
The SCRD is the supplier of water and is trying to restrict its use by using water pricing to control consumption behaviour of its customers.
This initiative should be stopped immediately. Proper communication and information has been lacking and the SCRD is trying to slip this through.
