The letters from Kathy Para (“Water 101”) and Chester Machniewski (“Overreaction on watershed”) in last week’s Coast Reporter do contribute to the water supply debate on the Coast – to a point. But, as a citizen of this planet, I hate to read Kathy’s comments such as “water is here, available, abundant,” and Chester’s comments on the “fear that seems to be out there that there is a water shortage, there isn’t.”
I am quite happy to live on the Sunshine Coast and comforted that the water coming from my taps is treated and quite safe to drink. We are lucky. But, on a world scale, the story is very different and the task of supplying safe drinking water to the world’s population is a constant and heavy challenge. Yes, there are the salty seven seas, the Great Lakes and polluted rivers. But it takes man’s ingenuity to deliver water safe for us to drink. So let’s remember that we are world citizens and not be too smug.
