I write this as a warning to everyone, especially to seniors who use debit accounts to pay their bills and expenses. Check your account balances often. A lot of mysterious things are happening and nobody can or will explain what’s going on.
About a year ago somebody got into my debit account and bought themselves a night at a resort and a big meal. How they got into my account, when they obviously didn’t know my PIN or have access to my card, nobody will explain to me.
My bank corrected this right away, but they were so quick to rectify it without asking any questions, I was suspicious that they knew more about it than they were saying. I promptly changed my card and PIN.
Recently you may have seen on CBC News that Spotify, a music streaming service, has been taking unauthorized payments out of people’s accounts and nobody can or will explain how this is happening. So my advice is to check your account balances often and carefully.
Report any unauthorized transactions to your bank at once, also to the police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
The big banks are not looking after your money, only their own. When something untoward does happen, you can’t get a credible explanation from anybody.
