Kudos to Georgina Brandon of Gibsons for reminding people that bottled water is basically ridiculous (“Get off bottled water,” Letters, May 24).
Besides the billions of plastic bottles in existence, we live in a part of the world that has some of the finest drinking water on the planet. Why on earth would we still be purchasing bottled water? Why did we ever?
I wanted to bring this topic up months ago when at one of our candidate meetings during the last election I couldn’t help but notice that every candidate had a plastic bottle in front of them – clearly supplied by some organizer of the evening. Here we were discussing environmental issues (amongst other topics) and every candidate except one had a bottle of water in front of them. Verna Chan was the only one with a reusable cup.
The excuse that the bottles are recyclable is no longer valid. The phrase that has long been used is “REDUCE. REUSE. RECYCLE.” Please take note of the first word in the phrase. In this case though, DON’T USE would be more fitting.
Plastic bottled water needs to go the way of the dodo bird. That poor bird is gone forever and plastic water bottles need to do the same.
