On Dec. 16, 2015, four remarkable men were compelled to stop their vehicles on the Sunshine Coast Highway near Trout Lake to investigate a light appearing to originate from the ravine beside the road.

All four shared a feeling that something was “terribly wrong.”

What they discovered was that my parents’ car had plunged off the pavement a short time earlier, dropping about 30 feet down an embankment to lie smashed against some trees and rocks at the bottom. My 12-year-old son, Brenden, a passenger in the car, was very badly injured. Though no one on the highway at that time knew the extent of his injuries, these four heroes immediately slid down the muddy embankment in the darkness and rescued my only child.

As a result of their bravery, Brenden is now well on his way to a complete recovery from the multiple skull fractures he suffered in the accident. Tragically though, the driver, my mother (Irene Jones) did not survive the crash.

Although a thank you is hardly appropriate, I’ll try anyway, and am pleased to say that Byron, John and Reid, who have stayed in touch with Brenden and our family in Toronto, are now considered part of our family. I’d also like to extend a special thanks to Dave, who was the fourth man on the scene, and the RCMP (especially Const. Mike Lavric) who were so supportive to my family, especially Brenden during his recovery. Thanks also to the EMS officials for transporting Brenden to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver with such speed and efficiency.

The gratitude I feel to all those involved in saving Brenden is, simply, beyond my words. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Arwenna Jones, Toronto
