Art is all in the eyes of the beholder – right? Apparently this is the case with respect to Sechelt council, who agreed to shell out $13,692 of taxpayer funds for two burned-out tree stumps from last year’s forest fire. This is not in any way a reflection of our thoughts on a memorial for John Phare. The renaming of Wormy Lake for the tree faller, close to where he lost his life, is a wonderful tribute to him.
Given the increase in our property taxes, one has to wonder if there isn’t a better use for our hard-earned dollars. We are appalled at council’s complete lack of regard in allocating our property taxes and angry that our collective hard-earned dollars are spent on burned-out tree stumps, in the name of artwork. We hope other Sechelt taxpayers will voice their concerns over this gross lack of judgment.
