World Teachers' Day, created by UNESCO in 1994, is a worldwide celebration held annually on Oct. 5. Its aim is to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations can be met.

Celebrate the countless contributions of 55 million teachers worldwide: significant tasks that encourage students and enhance communities.

Why take a stand for teachers? Because the profession has lost status in many parts of the world and chronic underfunding of public education in B.C. compromises students. Quality education offers families hope and the promise of a better standard of living. Two hundred and sixty-seven teachers on the Sunshine Coast support students to think critically and work cooperatively. From early learning and full-day kindergarten to Grade 12 graduation, teachers help students develop their potential and acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to a healthy society and a prosperous economy.

World Teachers' Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the work of professional educators. Consider sending a thank you card to a teacher this week.
