Why is it, especially at one of our local grocery stores, almost everything, from fruits to nuts, comes encased in plastic?
I don’t want it, and neither it seems does China, which has stopped taking in our “recyclable” plastic waste.
Somehow a U.K. grocery store (part of a chain) managed (in 10 weeks!) to eliminate plastic packaging from nearly 2,000 products, including fruit, vegetables, bacon, fish, baked goods, cheese and takeout food – and saw a substantial growth in sales as a result, according to CBC’s Marketplace.
It’s just one of several major chains in the U.K. going plastic-free. Ours, meanwhile, are strangely silent.
As a U.K. advocate says, large corporations “have the power to make or break a brand. So, of course, they have the power to say how it should be packaged.”
Please, let’s all do what we can to ensure our local store owners and their head offices get that message.
