Show a little pride in your community

There's a disturbing trend starting on the Coast. And no, this has nothing to do with mining or logging. It's vandalism. In recent weeks, schools and the municipal hall in Gibsons have both been victims of late night attacks. Windows have been smashed causing thousands of dollars of damage.

These thoughtless acts have raised the concerns of Mayor Barry Janyk and council to the extent that they've teamed up with School District No. 46 officials to offer a reward leading for information and the conviction of those responsible.

Janyk even mentioned at a recent council meeting, that it was kind of ironic that the night the recreation referendum was being passed, allowing for a new community centre to be built in Gibsons, some punk was at municipal hall smashing windows.

Talk about going from an incredible high to an incredible low.

Both Upper Gibsons and Gibsons Landing are showing resurgence of late.

We received a letter to the editor this week, singing the praises of all the work that has been done.

Business owners, town staff, volunteers and service organizations have worked hard putting in flower gardens, hanging baskets and the new performance stage in Winegarden Park. But as nice as those improvements are, looking up at the municipal hall and seeing boarded up windows is not a pretty sight.

And these problems are not only in Gibsons.

A few weeks ago we told you about the Cowrie Lane merchants in Sechelt who were getting fed up seeing their flower boxes destroyed by vandals.

So many people are fighting to preserve all that is good in this community and it's being ruined by a bunch of idiots who have nothing better to do late at night. Instead of taking pride in their community, they're destroying it.

Whoever you are, it's time to grow up and get a life. Find something more productive than destructive to do.
