Having attended many Gibsons town council meetings during the past 10 years, I was astonished and most disturbed to witness a resident’s extreme rudeness in the middle of a recent meeting and her verbal threats to the mayor as well as the bullying and potential slander of the director of planning by yet another resident. This second person also left the meeting following his tirade and proceeded to laugh loudly with several other people outside the main entrance even though the meeting was still in progress.
Fortunately there were no young people in attendance to witness this disrespectful and immature behaviour.
It seems that if the discussion does not reflect certain views of some residents, they ignore rules of order and resort to verbal threats, blatant rudeness and slanderous allegations. Ironically, such behaviour reflects more about the speaker than the individual targeted.
Surely in a democratic, civil society, respectful discourse is a common courtesy.
