At a time when most media outlets have chosen to ignore the Fraser Institute school rankings, Coast Reporter chose to write a major article and editorial in an attempt to somehow legitimize this hogwash. As the province moves towards a personalized learning curriculum, the idea that standardized testing in any way reflects the rich culture and strong learning environments in our schools is ludicrous.
There are so many strong assessment practices happening in our district schools. They provide a clearer, more detailed and accurate picture of each individual student’s achievement. To get this information, parents simply have to visit their neighbourhood school or contact their child’s teacher.
There are plenty of studies and articles that debunk the pseudo-science the Fraser Institute uses to arrive at these rankings. I commend superintendent Bocking for calling the whole thing “silly.” I would go one step further and call them politically motivated drivel.
