Save Princess Louisa Inlet

Letters

Editor:

The beauty of the Sunshine Coast inspires us and attracts tourists from around the world. Of the many idyllic locations, none is more iconic than Princess Louisa Inlet. Located at the northeast end of Jervis Inlet, its pristine setting includes features such as Malibu Rapids and Chatterbox Falls. It’s the best example of a southern fjord in North America. It needs our help.

Most people are unaware that the inlet is unprotected. Nearly 2,000 acres of the southern aspect, from the shoreline to the mountaintops, are now up for sale and may be logged. Any development could profoundly affect the delicate ecosystem.

The Princess Louisa International Society has partnered with the BC Parks Foundation in an effort to purchase and protect the land forever. The cost is $3 million. About 77 per cent of the funds have been raised but time is running out. The exclusive sales agreement expires at the end of August.

We have a chance to conserve Princess Louisa Inlet for present and future generations. Donations can be made through the BC Parks Foundation website. If the campaign is unsuccessful, your money will be returned. If you love nature, here’s a golden opportunity to do something important.
