“Sechelt Nation poised to exercise new powers over territory” (Coast Reporter, July 4) — wrong. What the court decision gave the Sechelt, Squamish and many other First Nations are not “new” rights.
Those are rights they had and used since time immemorial. They are rights that were ignored and arbitrarily taken away by European invaders, mostly British, who incidentally were violating the law established by their British king.
