Put animal safety first

The following letter was sent to Sechelt council and copied to Coast Reporter. I was present at the March 28 committee of the whole meeting with a group concerned about the use of body-gripping animal traps on the Sunshine Coast.

I was present at the March 28 committee of the whole meeting with a group concerned about the use of body-gripping animal traps on the Sunshine Coast.

I want to commend Coun. Doug Hockley on his impassioned comments while brandishing the leg-hold trap. He is obviously a man with a conscience, compassion and common sense.

I sincerely hope council can agree on a bylaw that would ban the use of traps in the District of Sechelt. Outside the boundaries, outdoor enthusiasts, their kids and pets will still be in danger of stepping into unmarked traps. But the District will have shown its concern for the safety of its citizens and the many tourists who come here to enjoy outdoor activities. And it will have shown an enlightened view of the humane treatment of wildlife.

I have heard that "pro-trappers" will again be presenting their side to council. Please bear in mind that trappers in this day and age primarily do so for sport, not a livelihood. Personally, I feel that inviting trappers' input is a bit like drafting laws to abolish slavery and inviting Simon Legree to come and talk about its good points. This is the 21st century, and these cruel and inhumane traps should not even exist.

More and more municipalities are banning outright or imposing restrictions on the use of traps, and I hope that Sechelt will follow suit.

Please put the safety of people and pets and consideration for wildlife ahead of a small group's need for cruel sport.
