I am responding to Des Delaney’s letter (“Lack of leadership,” Aug. 14) as a grateful Gibsons Zone 3 resident attending the brief ceremony to mark the completion of infrastructure taking us off the SCRD and onto the Gibsons water system.

Almost everyone attending wore a mask and were socially distancing outside between the reservoir and the new pump house. Mayor Beamish removed his mask to be heard without benefit of microphone over the hum from the pumps and the fact that the small group of attendees were spaced apart. There were brief words of congratulations from MP Patrick Weiler, MLA Nicholas Simons, chief administrative officer Emanuel Machado and director of engineering Dave Newman. SCRD chair Lori Pratt added special congratulations for the addition of Zone 3 SCRD water back into their system. Each speaker stood apart from Mayor Beamish. The photo – yes, a photo-op – took probably 2-3 seconds and records an important moment in Coast history. Had Dr. Henry attended, she would have been pleased to see adherence to COVID protocols. The whole event lasted probably 15 or 20 minutes.
