Proposal too massive

Re: “Six-storey strata blocks pitched for Sechelt waterfront,” Sept. 9.

A proposal to develop three lots at the corner of Highway 101 and Shorncliffe would mean five buildings – four apartments of up to six storeys and a row of townhouses, a total of 48 units and 80 parking spaces. Not counting the parking, 50 per cent of the property would be occupied by buildings and overhangs. These five large buildings would be sandwiched between beautifully treed lots with individual homes to the north and south. This development would mean cutting down virtually every large tree on the property, increased traffic, and a new traffic light at the corner of the highway and Shorncliffe Avenue.

This proposed development is big enough by itself to change Sechelt’s small-town character and make ugly our beautiful village.

And what benefit does Sechelt get from this proposal – an extension of the waterfront walkway from Snickett Park and the value of one (really, just one!) low-cost housing unit.

Most of us want to see development that enhances the beauty of our environment. None of us want to pave paradise and put up a parking lot.

The question is, why is Sechelt council even considering this proposal?

Have a look when you drive by. Is this the Sechelt you want to live in?
