Priorities out of whack

Letters

Editor:

With all the reporting on a new development containing “housing for seniors,” shutting down care homes and creating new but less accommodation for our elderly, it might be of interest for both council and developers to understand that a good many of our senior citizens are not rich, as seems to be implied.

The average CPP plus OAS combined amounts to approximately $1,282/month or $42.74/day. Could you live comfortably on that?

Compare this with “others” in our society: the mayor of Montreal gets approximately $470/day, the prime minister gets more than $650/day plus many perks; many star hockey players average more than $100,000/game, and Justin Bieber gets more than $3 million/concert.

So what is “affordable housing” when more than 75 per cent of a senior’s income has to go to paying the rent for accommodation that is so scarce that one woman was reduced to sleeping in her car?

Something is terribly wrong with our priorities here!
