Patience for new drivers

On Monday, Feb. 8 (Family Day), my 16-year-old was behind the wheel of our mini-van with his Learners’ L prominently displayed. As he signaled to turn left off Highway 101 into our driveway, a white SUV that was following behind us passed on the inside at a high rate of speed, crossing a double solid yellow line and nearly T-boning our vehicle.

I’ve seen it numerous times on the Coast when impatient drivers are tailgating, honking their horns or illegally passing vehicles with a New or Learner driver behind the wheel. It must be nerve-racking for first-time drivers to learn under these conditions.

I’m just asking for all drivers to be a little more patient with those learning to drive. Think about how you felt being behind the wheel of a vehicle for the first time. We were all learners once.
