The last few weeks I’ve been driving back and forth between Langdale and the Sechelt Aquatic Centre, three or four times per week. This works out to about 200 kilometres per week. A crazy amount of driving to go for a swim. All considered, I could pay twice the admission and still be ahead if the Gibsons pool opened.
As well, there is the stress of racing up that dangerous highway to be on time or forfeit my reservation. For ferry traffic add an extra 15 minutes. All told, a 45-minute swim sucks about three hours out of my day. This is an unnecessary waste of my time not to mention my pension.
I believe with proper management, attendance figures comparable to pre-COVID-19 is achievable. Already there is a 15-minute overlap in the swim schedule in Sechelt, which suggests there is pent up demand for our facilities. I state the obvious; open the Gibsons pool and they will come.
