The population of Sechelt is forecast to grow from 8,454 (2006) to 13,171 in 2021 if recent growth rates are repeated. The population of West Sechelt alone will be between 8,000 to 10,000 according to the official community plan (OCP).
The Sangara development will have up to 2,300 homes. At the same time the District of Sechelt is committed to reducing greenhouse gases, protecting the environment and wildlife and retaining the beauty and character of Sechelt.
It will be interesting to see how these incompatible objectives can be achieved.
In my opinion, Coast Reporter was quite wrong to say in the April 2 edition that "the public generally accept this OCP." The public did not have a voice at the March 29 meeting; all summing up was done by District staff. Most of the concerns from my table were left unspoken. I would bet serious money that less than two per cent of the population bother to read this 187-page document.
