As most Coasters know, at Davis Bay there is a long series of concrete bunkers, filled with stones, to provide a needed breakwater from the winter storms that often flooded the road in the past. These bunkers are topped with miniature artworks comprised of stones finely balanced on each other, three or four rocks high.
People always stop to admire these delicate minor inukshuks in their walks along the seawall. As a regular patron of Davis Bay waters for daily swims I also stop to look at the rockworks with admiration. I think this ongoing and ever-changing art display is one of the real wonders of our Coast and should be appreciated as such.
A big mystery is who does these fine artworks? In all my visits I have never seen the sculptures being built. It causes one to wonder if these miniature stone sculptures are the mischievous works of leprechauns, Cherokee little people, gnomes or other forest or seashore inhabitants. My guess is leprechauns! Perhaps not knowing who the artists are adds to the intrigue of the artifacts.
Whoever the creative people are, I hope the artwork will continue as it meets the test of what art should be all about.
