I wonder if there are any expats on the Coast who remember, as I do, the true meaning of Boxing Day? It started in the 1800s, I believe, when those who had the good fortune to receive more than they needed on Christmas Day – food and gifts, etc. – would “box” it up and pass it out to those in need. Where does this crazy over-the-top, shopping extravaganza fit in? The original idea makes good sense to me.
